Why local AI workloads run best on a Mac

Apple silicon has turned the Mac-versus-PC question into a hardware capability question. For teams running local AI and LLM workflows, the device is now the bottleneck or the enabler.

The request usually comes from the engineering side first. A developer or a data analyst asks for a Mac, and the reason is not preference or polish. The workload they need to run, a local language model, a large dataset, a build-and-test loop, performs better on Apple silicon than on the PC they were issued. In Forrester’s June 2026 Total Economic Impact study of Mac at work, one IT platform leader put it plainly: “AI teams use Mac devices exclusively because local AI and LLM workflows are available there first.”

For years the Mac-versus-PC conversation in business turned on support costs, security posture, and residual value. Those arguments still hold, and the same study puts numbers on them: a 153% return on investment and roughly $760 in total cost of ownership savings per Mac over five years. What is new is that the hardware itself has become a gating factor for a category of work that more teams are picking up every quarter.

Why the hardware matters now

AI workloads are hungry for two things: memory and sustained compute. Running a model locally means loading it into memory and keeping the processor busy for minutes at a time, not seconds. This is exactly where the older device strategy runs out of room.

Apple silicon handles it differently. The unified memory architecture gives the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine access to one shared pool of memory, so a laptop can hold a sizeable model in memory without a discrete graphics card. Just as important, the chips sustain that performance under load rather than throttling back once they heat up. Forrester’s interviewees described the gap in concrete terms. Identical workloads took “more than three times longer” to complete on their prior devices, constrained by CPU and GPU performance, thermal throttling, or the amount of available memory.

What actually runs better locally

The tasks that benefit are the ones teams are increasingly doing on the device rather than in a browser tab: compiling code, running local builds and tests, processing large datasets, and executing models or AI-enabled applications. Keeping that work local has three practical payoffs beyond raw speed.

Data stays put. Local inference means sensitive material never leaves the machine, which matters when the alternative is pasting client or patient data into a cloud service.

Latency drops. A model running on the device responds immediately, without a round trip to a server, which shortens the experiment-and-iterate loop that AI work depends on.

Cloud bills flatten. Work that runs locally is work you are not paying a provider to run, and inference costs add up quickly once a team moves past occasional use.

Forrester counts this capability as one of the study’s unquantified benefits: the composite organisation used Mac devices to run compute-intensive AI tasks locally with strong and consistent performance, reducing its reliance on centralised infrastructure where data sensitivity, latency, or cloud costs were the deciding factors.

When to think about this

The inflection point is not a headcount number, but is the moment a role’s output starts being limited by how fast the device can work. When a developer waits on builds, when an analyst cannot hold a dataset in memory, or when a team starts experimenting with local models and hits a wall, the device has become the constraint. The same signal shows up on the finance side when cloud inference charges begin climbing faster than anyone predicted.

At that point, specifying the right Mac is a procurement decision with a direct line to productivity. It is worth getting the memory configuration right at purchase, because unified memory cannot be upgraded later.

The hardware is the enabler, not the whole answer.
