Clinical fleet management
Every Mac, iPad, and iPhone in the practice should be configured, monitored, and updated as a single fleet. Mobile Device Management (MDM) is the platform that makes this possible. It enforces password policy, deploys software, applies security updates on the schedule you choose rather than when each user feels like restarting, and pulls devices back into compliance automatically when they drift.
For a clinic, the practical value shows up in three places. New staff arrive and their iPad or Mac is ready to use by the time they sit down. A clinical iPad that goes missing can be locked and wiped remotely. The Mac at the front desk gets its security updates without anyone having to negotiate a restart at the wrong moment. The MDM does its job in the background. Nobody on staff has to think about it.

Network reliability when imaging cannot wait
Imaging is the part of a dental practice where the network is most exposed. A cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan or a panoramic image moving from the sensor to the diagnostic Mac is a real-time data transfer. When the network stutters, the workflow stops. The patient is still in the chair. Multiply by a clinic of eight to twelve staff and the cost of an unreliable network compounds quickly.
The right architecture for a clinical environment uses business-grade equipment with redundancy. Fortinet for the firewall and security, Ruckus for the wireless network designed and tuned to the building’s actual physical layout, and connection redundancy where possible so a single carrier outage does not bring the clinic down. None of this is unique to dental, but the cost of getting it wrong is more visible in a clinical setting.

Backup and PHIPA compliance
iCloud handles personal files. It does not handle a patient management database, the imaging server, or seven years of retention required under privacy law. Practices that depend on iCloud as their backup strategy discover the gap at exactly the wrong moment: after a ransomware attack, after a hardware failure, or during an audit.
A working backup architecture for a clinical practice covers the practice management database with point-in-time recovery, full-system images of every clinical Mac so a failed device can be restored in hours rather than days, encrypted offsite replication so a fire in the building does not take both the data and its backup, and documented retention policies that satisfy Alberta’s Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). Each of these is non-optional for a regulated practice. None of them are provided by consumer backup.

Apple Authorized Repair for clinical Macs and iPads
When a Mac in the operatory fails, the practice has two costs. The cost of the repair, and the cost of the staff time lost while waiting for it. The second cost is usually larger.

Password management and clinical access
Clinical practices have a specific password management problem. Most clinical software still operates on per-user logins, but the workflows are shared. A hygienist needs to sign into the imaging system from any chair. A reception staff member needs to access the schedule from any workstation. Apple Passwords handles individual logins for individual users. Once you have shared credentials, role-based access, or an audit requirement, you have outgrown what it was built for.
A business password platform (1Password Business is the typical fit for our clinical clients) handles shared logins with role-based access, immediate revocation when a staff member leaves, audit trails the privacy officer can produce on request, and cross-platform support for the Windows or Android device the bookkeeper might be using occasionally. It also supports single sign-on (SSO) so the directory of authorised users matches the directory of who can access patient data.

Remote support that does not need a clinic visit
Most clinical IT issues do not need someone on-site. A Mac that will not print, a clinical iPad that has lost its enrolment, a software update that has not applied: all of these are solvable remotely if the IT provider has the right tools in place. The difference between an IT setup that fixes problems in fifteen minutes and one that needs a clinic visit measured in hours is mostly the difference between screen sharing and proper remote management.
A managed remote setup combines an MDM platform, a remote monitoring and management platform, and a ticketing system. Together they let the IT provider see every device, push updates, run scripts to apply fixes, and resolve most issues without ever needing to be physically present at the practice. The on-site visit is reserved for hardware work, network installs, and the situations where a hands-on presence is genuinely required.

The dental-specific stack
The technology stack inside a clinical practice is more specialised than a typical small business. RIPEDA supports the practice management platforms most commonly used in Alberta dental and oral surgery clinics, including Curve Hero, Open Dental, Wave Ortho, and Allied Star, in both Mac-native and hybrid Windows-in-virtualisation configurations.
The imaging stack involves CBCT systems, panoramic units, intraoral camera sensors, and the diagnostic Macs that interpret them. The network has to carry imaging traffic without saturating. The backup has to capture imaging files at the volumes they actually generate. The retention policies have to satisfy provincial and federal privacy requirements. Each of these is its own problem with its own answer, and getting them right at the planning stage is faster and cheaper than discovering the gap during an incident.
We support the regulatory frame as well. PHIPA, PIPEDA, and any college-specific guidance shape how backups are stored, how access is logged, and how data residency is documented. Training is delivered to staff on the tools they will use day-to-day, so the transition feels like an upgrade rather than a disruption.
Ongoing managed service kicks in once the migration is complete. Monthly per-seat pricing covers device management, monitoring, help desk, security, and routine repair. Annual agreements are how we structure the relationship, because doing this work properly requires understanding your environment deeply, and that investment makes more sense with a real commitment on both sides.

Common questions
Do you work with our practice management software?
Yes. RIPEDA supports practice management platforms commonly used in Canadian dental and oral surgery practices, including Curve Hero, Open Dental, Wave Ortho, and Allied Star, in both Mac-native and hybrid Windows-in-virtualisation configurations. If your practice runs Windows-only software inside a virtualised environment on Mac hardware, we work with that setup too. How do you handle PHIPA and PIPEDA compliance?
Compliance is built into how RIPEDA structures the environment. Encrypted disks (FileVault on every Mac), encrypted backups with documented retention, multi-factor authentication on access to patient data, audit trails for who touched what and when, and geographic data residency you can demonstrate to an auditor. We document the setup so your privacy officer has the evidence they need on request.
How quickly can you onboard our clinic?
Onboarding follows Discovery, Migration, and Training. Discovery typically takes one to two weeks while we audit your current environment and document gaps. Migration runs over planned weekend or evening windows so patient care is not interrupted. Training is delivered to staff on the new tools. End to end, most clinics are fully operating under RIPEDA managed services in four to six weeks.
What does day-to-day support look like once we are live?
Day-to-day support has three layers. First, an MDM and monitoring platform watches every device and catches problems before staff notice them. Second, your team has direct phone and email access to the help desk during business hours, with one to four hour response on standard issues and faster on critical ones. Third, after-hours emergency support is available for clinics with that level of contractual coverage.
Will Apple Authorized Repair work for our clinical iPads and Macs?
Yes. RIPEDA is an Apple Authorized Service Provider, which means warranty and AppleCare work happens in-house with genuine parts and certified technicians. For clinical practices this means no trips to the Apple Store, no losing a clinical iPad for a week, and no employees putting repair costs on personal credit cards. Repair is part of the managed services package, not a separate transaction.
Can you support multiple locations?
Yes. RIPEDA supports multi-location dental groups in Alberta with consistent device management, shared network policies, and centralised reporting across every clinic. The MDM and monitoring layer makes the location count largely invisible from an IT-operations perspective. We have current clients running across two to five clinics with the same supported experience at each.
What if we are still on Windows and not sure about Apple?
We help practices think through the question rather than assume the answer. If Apple is the right fit, we can plan and execute the migration over a weekend with no interruption to patient care. If Apple is not the right fit for parts of your stack (some Windows-only practice management software is genuinely better on Windows), we can support a hybrid environment and be honest about where each side wins.
