Data recovery when a Mac drive fails
A failed drive does not always mean lost data. The work that determines whether the files come back happens in the first hour after the failure, not in the lab afterwards.
A senior designer’s MacBook drive fails on a Friday afternoon. Backups have been running but the most recent full snapshot is two weeks old, and the work since has been on a critical client deliverable due Monday. The drive makes a faint clicking sound when she tries to wake the laptop. She does not know what to do next.
This is the moment where the next few hours determine whether the work comes back. Two paths exist from here, and the cheaper one (let someone untrained look at it) usually closes off the better one.
What a working data recovery looks like
DriveSavers operates a clean-room lab where Mac drives (solid-state drives, traditional hard disk drives, Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) storage, and some Apple Silicon storage in specific scenarios) get evaluated, recovered where possible, and returned with the data on a new drive or external medium. The recovery odds depend entirely on what kind of failure happened.
Mechanical failure. Older hard disk drives with bearing or head failures. Recovery is typically successful when the drive is shipped intact and the lab has the parts to perform a head swap in a clean environment.
Controller failure. The electronics on the drive fail but the storage media is intact. Recovery is typically successful when the lab has a matching donor drive for parts.
Water damage. Coffee, flood, condensation. Recovery is typically successful when the drive is sealed and shipped without further drying attempts. A drive someone has tried to dry with rice or a hair dryer is usually worse off than one that was simply powered down and bagged.
Electrical or power-surge damage. Damage to the drive controller from a surge or a failed power supply. Recovery odds are good because the storage media is usually intact.
Accidental deletion or formatting. Software-level data loss. Often recoverable without physical lab work, if the drive is taken offline immediately and not written to.
Apple Silicon storage failure. This is the new variable. Apple Silicon Macs have storage controllers integrated into the System on Chip (SoC), which makes some failure modes effectively unrecoverable. DriveSavers can sometimes work around this with very specific techniques, but the success rate is lower than for traditional drive failures, and the cost is typically higher.

The conversation about what kind of failure happened, what recovery is plausible, and what the cost will look like happens between people who already know each other. Coordinated logistics. For older Macs with separable storage, the drive can be sent to DriveSavers while the Mac stays at RIPEDA for any Apple Authorized Repair (AAR) work the device needs. For Apple Silicon Macs with storage integrated into the System on Chip (SoC), the whole unit usually has to go to DriveSavers, whose work is sanctioned by Apple and does not void manufacturer warranty. Pricing discount. The recovery itself bills directly from DriveSavers to the client, with a 10% discount applied through RIPEDA’s reseller relationship.
What to do (and what not to do) when a drive fails
The first hour after a drive starts misbehaving is where the chance of recovery is most easily destroyed. The right moves:
- Power the device down. Do not keep trying to access the drive. Each failed read can degrade the chance of a successful recovery.
- Do not run repair utilities that write to the drive. Disk Utility, Disk Drill, and recovery apps in general can make a recoverable situation unrecoverable by writing new metadata to a damaged drive.
- Note exactly what happened. Was the drive making sounds? Did it disappear from Finder? Did the Mac kernel panic? The details matter to the lab.
- Call RIPEDA or your IT provider. We coordinate the next steps.
What not to do:
- Do not put the drive in a freezer. The internet folklore about this is wrong and tends to introduce condensation damage on top of whatever was already wrong.
- Do not open the drive enclosure. Mac solid-state drives are not user-serviceable, and traditional hard disk drives need a clean-room environment to be opened safely.
- Do not keep using the device hoping the problem goes away. Continuing to power a failing drive often makes the eventual recovery harder.
When to think about this
The right time to think about data recovery is before you need it, because the work that prevents the need (backup architecture, off-site replication, tested restores) is cheaper than the work that recovers data after the fact. A working backup is the first line of defence. DriveSavers is what happens when the backup has gaps and the data on the failed drive is genuinely needed.
